Feeling Overwhelmed These Days? YĢ¶eĢ¶aĢ¶hĢ¶ mĢ¶eĢ¶ tĢ¶oĢ¶oĢ¶
If you're like me, you have a lot to focus on from 2023 going into 2024!
As things are ramping up for 2024, here are a few tips Iāve learned from managing freelance teams, many clients, and even 5+ large automotive branches (yes all at once by myself) down to training people all over the UK. And, being pretty good at it too *deflates head as existing room* š
Before we jump inā¦
PLEASE always remember staff really help you when things are very busy. Also, people aren't robots, so everyone has situations going on behind closed doors you donāt know about. You get paid to work yes, but not to be a robot doing everything perfectly. We, as humans, are built to be imperfect, and HEY! Thatās ok, itās about the journey together that makes the path to perfection more achievable.
Finally, Hereās Some Experience From My Past: I remember EVERY bloody single day the director of Renault came into my office saying āTeamwork makes the dream work Kentā - and honestly, it did REALLY annoy me eventually. Years later I finally realised, he was just being a leader and embedding things into me to make me a better leader. Especially, because I had a lot on my plate! From managing a lot of people throughout the automotive brands I worked for (all 5 of them) to working alongside the UK agency that controls a lot of top automotive brands to make UK-wide marketing campaigns etc. So, as CHEESY as it sounds, he was 100% right! Always take in what directors say, as they spread knowledge like butter on bread without you even realising.
Anyways, Iām waffling on, letās dive in!
#1: Clearly communicate: If we take time to be clear the first time we communicate, the chances of it being received correctly increase greatly. Right? And, honestly that results in smoother operations.
#2: Follow through: No, not in the way youāre thinking š©š If you are on the receiving end of a communication, it means making sure you follow up later. Honestly, as humans, we SUCK at this but learn to be diligent. For me, this also means cross-checking with others to make sure they understand what I asked them to do. Remember what I said above when you do this, people are humans, so ask in the most positive manner possible! #weallforget
#3: Do what you say and be timely: This is so basic, that it almost needs no explanation. Right? I tell people, "Your word is your bond". Let people know early if you need more time to make a deadline. Or, just live within what I call āThe Ali G Realmā by ākeeping it realā with people. Iām very well-known for this, as being real with people not only shows character but also makes them aware of what is going on. Communication and honesty are the best policies!
#4: Practice the growth mindset: Stuff is gonna break. People are gonna get bruised (metaphorically obviously - donāt get social on me š) as they race to get stuff done. Remember that the growth mindset should trigger these questions: (a) What can I learn from what happened? and (b) What does this make possible?
#5: Track projects and document processes: We never want work procedures to be stuck inside someone's mind. Honestly, I work with so many people and everyone wants to just call to talk about things, metrics, and blah blah. How the hell are we going to remember everything, are we robots with 100000GB of storage? NAH! Every process needs to be documented into a process anyone can follow. Notice I said āeveryoneā thereā¦ This allows others to step in when problems arise. Plus, keep track of things in the madness we all call business.
#6: Always ask for help when you're stuck: It's never a weakness to raise your hand and say, "I'm confused" or "I don't know what to do". Instead, it's the wise thing to do. It shows in fact, the complete opposite. When I trained people all across the UK, I learned that people are VERY reluctant to stick that hand up and admit this. Remember, with admittance, there lies honesty!
#7: Remember we're a team and we need to support each other: It's really important to help people when they're going through a rough patch, or, aren't fully activated at work because of life struggles. Plus, again from my learnings, not everyone may have the drive you have or passion for the job. It may be just a means to an end for them.
These are the expectations that I go over every time I meet with clients, big companies, and directors. I cannot repeat them too many times. The goal is for these expectations to become second nature to everyone. So, I genuinely hope sharing these has helped you or will do in your future!
PS: Feel free to borrow my expectations as outlined above. They might help you next time you're under pressure. To be honest, I know youāll #bossit anyway! šŖš»
